Hut accommodation
Sleep in shared mountain huts rather than tents, with facilities varying by stop.

KILIMANJARO ROUTE
The classic hut-based route to the Roof of Africa.
Follow Kilimanjaro’s historic south-eastern trail through forest, moorland and alpine desert, sleeping in mountain huts along the way.

Marangu follows a direct south-eastern approach and is the only main Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodation. The ascent and descent use the same broad corridor.
The trail can appear straightforward, but its shorter schedules and summit night remain demanding. The six-day option gives more time for an acclimatization walk than the five-day outline.
Sleep in shared mountain huts rather than tents, with facilities varying by stop.
Follow one of Kilimanjaro’s best-known routes through distinct ecological zones.
Move through Mandara, Horombo and Kibo on a direct approach to the summit.
Compare both options carefully; the extra day can support a more measured schedule.

A visual introduction to the ascent, the summit and the return.
Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut
Begin on a broad trail through humid montane forest and settle into a steady walking pace.

Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut
Leave the forest for open heath and moorland, with mountain views when conditions are clear.
Horombo Hut → acclimatization walk
Walk higher before returning to Horombo, using the day to adjust and prepare for the upper mountain.
Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut
Cross increasingly stark terrain toward Kibo, then rest and prepare for an early summit start.

Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut
Climb slowly through the night toward the crater rim and summit before beginning a long descent.

Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate
Return through moorland and forest to complete the route at the park gate.

A summit attempt usually means an early start in darkness, very cold temperatures and a slow, steady ascent. The aim is Uhuru Peak, with sunrise a memorable part of the high-mountain experience when conditions allow.
Reaching the top is never guaranteed. Guides assess conditions and your ability along the way; turning around may be the right decision. A long descent follows any summit attempt.
